چکیده
Prospect theory, loss aversion, mental accounts, hyperbolic discounting, cues, and the endowment effect can all be seen as examples of situationalism— the view that people isolate decisions and overweight immediate aspects of the situation relative to longer term concerns. But outside of the laboratory, emotionally-powerful situational factors— frames, social influence, mental accounts— are almost always endogenous and often the result of self-interested entrepreneurs. As such, laboratory work and, indeed, psychology more generally, gives us little guidance as to market outcomes. Economics provides a stronger basis for understanding the supply of emotionally-relevant situational variables. Paradoxically, the rise of situationalism actually increases the relative importance of economics. * I am particularly grateful for conversations with Gary Becker, Daniel Benjamin, Drew Fudenberg, David Laibson, Richard Posner, Jesse Shapiro, Andrei Shleifer and Richard Zeckhauser. Paul Romer particularly influenced my thinking in this area.

متن کاملNber Working Paper Series Big Data and Big Cities: the Promises and Limitations of Improved Measures of Urban Life
New, “big” data sources allow measurement of city characteristics and outcome variables higher frequencies and finer geographic scales than ever before. However, big data will not solve large urban social science questions on its own. Big data has the most value for the study of cities when it allows measurement of the previously opaque, or when it can be coupled with exogenous shocks to people...

متن کاملNber Working Paper Series the Supply of Gender Stereotypes and Discriminatory Beliefs
What determines beliefs about the ability and appropriate role of women? An overwhelming majority of men and women born early in the 20th century thought women should not work; a majority now believes that work is appropriate for both genders. Betty Friedan (1963) postulated that beliefs about gender were formed by consumer good producers, but a simple model suggests that such firms would only ...

We identify and discuss policies that are being pursued in the United States to encourage local entrepreneurship and innovation. While arguments exist for and again...
